Community Service Event: "Bowl for Kids Sake"

On Friday, February 22 Katie Johnson organized for us to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters at the "Bowl for Kids Sake".  Our fraternity raised an impressive $900!  The night was full of fun games, strikes and gutter balls.  Throughout the evening, all the bowlers were presented with opportunities to win prizes for different gift certificates at local businesses.  Some of the competitions included an Elvis Presley imitation, a hand stand contest, and the most gutter balls bowled.  "Bowl for Kids Sake" proved to be an enjoyable time and is definitely an organization our fraternity will be sure to participate with again in the future!

Professional Event: Kalamazoo Gazette

On Thursday March 13th and Friday March 14th, we went on a tour of the Kalamazoo Gazette. The Kalamazoo Gazette is a great local company that embarks in many different areas. The tour began in the creative room of the marketing department. This room was completely designed by employees and is designed to be comfortable to come up with new and innovative ideas for the Gazette. Next we went to the news room, which is where all the writing and designing of the Gazette takes place. Following the news room, we were able to see the presses in action! The Kalamazoo Gazette is a Noontime newspaper which generally runs their distribution between 10am and 11am. It only takes an hour to run approximately 30,000 full newspapers. While the presses were running, the newspapers zoomed around us (even from the ceiling). Then the papers move down into the basement, where advertisements are inserted and the papers are bundled and put into the trucks for delivery. It was really interesting to see what all goes into the newspaper business.

Professional Event: Hormel Foods

On Monday February, 25th we had Bob Samples from Hormel Foods come and present to our fraternity. Bob is the director of Category planning and support. He gave us a great presentation on the history of Hormel Foods and the culture (mom and pop feeling). As a member of Hormel Foods every employee gets the opportunity to meet with the CEO within their first year of working at Hormel. Bob also discussed the opportunities available for sales and marketing majors. Finally, Bob touched on professionalism and how to be professional on the job as well as in an interview.

Fundraising Gets a New Look

We have started a few new things with fundraising such as themed meetings, little Cesar's pizza kits, raffles, and a members auction. Instead of dressing down in your scrubs and ripped t-shirts, the chapter members participate in a theme and pay $3.00 towards their fundraising total. Our first themed meeting was "Rep Your Area"; members dressed in clothing that represented their home town. Participation in the themed meeting was wonderful and the members became acquainted with others from their area. The next themed meeting is 'Born in the 80s". PIZZA! PIZZA! Chapter members will be selling Little Cesar's Products from February 24 to March 16. They can sell pizza kits, cheese bread kits, pie making kits, pre-made salads, and tubs of cookie dough. Each item has a different price value that will contribute to each member's fundraising total. Of course Epsilon Omicron is still doing raffles. This semester we are raffling off tickets to a Detroit Tigers Baseball game. The tickets are a dollar each and proceeds go straight to their fundraising. Only one winner with receive the tickets. If you would like to donate or recommend items to be raffled off please contact Marissa Servinsky at 248.425.9134. Our new fundraising event is a members auction. I choose 8 volunteers to be auctioned off to all the chapter members. Originally the auction was scheduled around Valentines day and was rescheduled to April 6th. The volunteers will 'strut their stuff' in front of the room and have a short bio about themselves. The bio is anything from long walks on the beach to being a member of the computer club. The chapter members interested in these volunteers will compete with other members prices and win a date with the volunteer of their choice. The volunteer who is auctioned of for the highest price will receive prizes such as a gift certificate to Beaners coffee shop, Kalamazoo 10 movie theater, and to Cold Stone creamery. Since everyone waits till the end of the semester to pay their $100 fundraising for the fraternity, the auction will be a nice event at the end to tie things up.

Epsilon Omicron: Giving back to the Comminity

The 2007-2008 school year has been successful for the Epsilon Omicron Chapter, especially with our community service.  Last semester we volunteered at the Binder Park Zoo for their Halloween Zoo Boo, and more than 25 brothers volunteered with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at an adoption event.  We also participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.  Our chapter raised more than $1,100.00 for the American Cancer , and we all had a lot of fun interacting with other organizations in the community.  This semester three teams participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bowl-a-Thon.  We were able to donate more then $700.00 to the organization, and we all had a fun night bowling.  Our next big event will be Relay for Life.  This will be held in April at Western Michigan University.  Relay for Life is a 24 hour event that helps support cancer patients and cancer research.  Our goal is to raise $1,000.00.  With our past success, I am sure we will be able to reach our goal.  I am very proud to be the Vice President of Community Service and proud of all of the brothers who donate their time to give back to the community!

Letter From the Senior Vice President

This semester has been a great semester with lots of team effort from all brothers. I am very impressed by all the help everyone offers each other and there have been many brothers who have gone above and beyond. This past month we just had our brotherhood event, which was a success. Unfortunately, we were not able to go to Camp Kidwell but we still had a great experience at the Seelye Center. Thanks to one of our newer brother’s we were able to get the Seelye Center for free which was an extra bonus. I have set up a date already for brotherhood in the fall at Camp Kidwell because their weekends are booking up fast. We will be going October 4th and spending the night in the cabins. It’s something that everyone has enjoyed doing in the past so I was happy that we were able to book it again in early fall for next semester. So if any brothers would like to stop by at the camp please feel free. However, I just ask that you let me know ahead of time so I can plan accordingly.  I also plan on looking into doing a low ropes course at the camp to do something different with our brotherhood games. We look forward seeing you at our events and thank you for all your support!

Letter From the Vice President of Alumni Relations

As the new Vice President of Alumni Relations I would like to start off by saying that I am very honored to hold this position and excited to be able to work and communicate with each and every Deltasig alumni. As V.P. there are many goals that I wish to accomplish, one of which was to reinstate the alumni newsletter. I also plan to create a database of every DSP alumni with the correct contact information including their current position in the professional world. Currently we are planning the annual alumni golf outing and once the details are decided upon they will be made available.

State of the Chapter Address From the President

My name is Elizabeth Chesbrough and I am the new President of the Epsilon Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi. I am a junior double majoring through the Schools of Business and Communication. I am proud to report that the state of the brotherhood is strong. Last semesters pledge class is extremely motivated and full of wonderful ideas to continue the relevancy of DSP on campus at Western Michigan University.  For example, Brother Jeff Ayan has developed a new phone trio system, which functions to improve participation in brotherhood events. Another development strengthening the brotherhood is our new Standards Board. This committee was formed to help ensure consistency in the image and message of Delta Sigma Pi, as a professional business fraternity. This board oversees all publications and communications arising from DSP, promoting a positive message throughout the community. Epsilon Omicron also had a very successful recruiting season under the leadership of Senior Vice President Jenny Turner. The new pledges demonstrate considerable enthusiasm and commitment, and promise to bring energy and excitement to the mission of the fraternity. Rest assured DSP continues to be relevant on campus and in the community and is a positive force for change at Western Michigan University. On behalf of the Epsilon Omicron Chapter, we're excited and motivated about our upcoming semester!
